General comes clean at Soho baths…

General Demolition has been engaged by ISG InteriorExterior to perform demolition and strip out works for the £25m regeneration of the Marshall Street Baths in the heart of Westminster, situated between Poland Street and Carnaby Street in London’s Soho.

The 21-week demolition programme includes strip out works in the main baths, the complete demolition of the ‘second class’ pool and basement, structural alterations to the Soho NCP car park and ‘top down’ demolition of the existing Westminster City Council cleaning depot and four-storey building above.

The ambitious Marshall Street Regeneration project will see the restoration of the stunning, 1930s marble-lined main pool to its former glory, delivering a high quality refurbished and upgraded leisure centre including a gym, exercise studios, health suite and treatment rooms. The scheme also includes a new purpose-built Council street cleansing depot in Dufours Place, an upgraded car park in Poland Street and residential flats with a proportion of affordable housing.

The Grade II listed building opened in 1932 and is famous for its barrel vaulted roof. The baths closed in 1997 due to health and safety and operational maintenance concerns. The refurbished leisure centre is scheduled to open in the first half of 2010 and will be run as a public facility by Westminster City Council.
