Stanley-LaBounty announces lay-offs…

Attachment manufacturer announces more lay-offs at its Two Harbors factory in the US.

The name of LaBounty is synonymous with the development of highly specialised demolition attachments for the demolition industry. However, it appears that even such well-known and respected brands are not impervious to the economic recession that continues to eat away at the demolition industry.

As this video from Northlands News Center highlights, the company has just been hit by another round of lay-offs that are directly attributed to the current global economic crisis and credit crunch.

Aah, bless…!

Architects offered counseling after seeing their work demolished.

Thanks to an unhealthy consumption of daytime television, online conspiracy theories and tabloid newspaper “editorials” I though I’d heard everything. And then I read this.

It seems that our friends in the architectural world find the whole business of demolition so troubling to their sensitive and creative minds that they’re now taking counseling after watching their handiwork turned to so much rubble.

Of course, they could have designed their buildings to be a little more future-proof, ensuring that their sad demise didn’t happen until long after the architect had been called to that great drawing office in the sky. Or, rather than designing atria made from Dodo egg membrane and Narwhal spit, they could have designed the building in a more modular fashion, allowing it to be carefully dismantled and possibly reassembled in another form or location.

But no.

In today’s increasingly touchy-feely world, the only possible answer to having seen your building hit repeatedly with a hydraulic hammer is a period of prolonged, over-expensive and often pointless therapy.

I wonder if architects will appreciate the irony?

JCB recently hosted a demolition day for members of the NFDC. And here’s the footage.

Back in 2006 when it was the primary sponsor of the National Federation of Demolition Contractors’ annual convention in Barcelona, JCB hosted an impressive Demolition Day at its premises in Uttoxeter. Three years on, and the company has repeated the exercise, hosting an exclusive and well-attended event to show off some of the new additions to its product range, and to unveil its new £40 million Heavy Products factory.

The company has very kindly provided us with this brief review video.

The following, rather more raw footage was shot for Demolition News.

Juventus Stadium demolition video…

New Holland has produced a video showing the demolition of the famous Stadio Delle Alpi.

Excavator manufacturer New Holland has produced a video showing its equipment playing a key role in the demolition of the famous Stadio Delle Alpi, home of the Juventus football team in Turin. Just a pity that the soundtrack used on this version doesn’t rock quite as hard as the one shown at the EDA Conference in Nice!

Along with dust and vibration, noise is one of the single biggest challenges facing demolition contractors. But it is a problem that has long been notoriously difficult to predict. Until now.

New software on offer from Riverside Environmental Services and most recently harnessed by leading UK contractor Cantilon allows demolition professionals to predict and model sound levels from a wide variety of sources, as this exclusive podcast explains.

Please note that John Campbell, one of the guest contributors on this podcast, will be covering this subject at the forthcoming IDE Roadshows, further details of which can be found here.

Exclusive Podcast – The Danger of PCBs…

Danish environmental engineer Ole Geisler discusses the problem of PCBs.

Ole Geisler
Ole Geisler
The demolition industry is one that seems to be continually faced with potentially dangerous and even lethal chemicals. Over the years, the industry has had to contend with lead and asbestos and, more recently, blown foam.

And now, lurking on the horizon like a huge carcinogenic cloud, is the danger represented by the presence of PCBs, a subject that was highlighted in a presentation at the recent EDA conference by environmental engineer, Ole Geisler.

Demolition News caught up with him immediately afterwards to record this exclusive podcast.
