Video – Cooling towers tumble at the double…

Onlookers cheer as twin towers tumble.

A pair of identical, 462-foot towers were imploded at St. Johns River Power Park in Jacksonville, Florida yesterday.

Preparation took about 10 weeks for the implosion. It was over in just more than 10 seconds. More than 1,500 pounds of dynamite and 12,000 linear feet of detonation were used according to media reports.

Video – We’ve come a long way…

Film from 1971 shows the progress the industry has made.

If you left site yesterday a little disappointed by the aroma of the new anti-bacterial handewash in your site toilet; a tad upset that the site canteen didn’t have your preferred brand of decaf coffee; or just a teeny bit angry that your hard hat made you noggin a little sweaty, you might want to take a look at this film for a reality check.

This was filmed in 1971 in Kensington, London; that less than 50 years ago. And yet barely any of the practices on display would be permitted today.

Bumper book bonanza…

Massive book order demonstrates industry’s commitment to the future.

It’s more than four years since our children’s book – My Dad Does Demolition – went on sale. And the industry’s appetite for the book shows no signs of abating. In fact, we are in the process of fulfilling our largest batch of orders ever, with more than 500 books ordered in a single week.

The books have been ordered by a number of UK demolition contractors to support their work in their local community and to be used at school open days. And it is hoped that the book might help inspire the next generation of demolition men and women.

“I am delighted that My Dad Does Demolition continues to sell and I am delighted that it is selling in such huge numbers,” says co-author Mark Anthony. “The book had been reprinted four times before we switched to a print-on-demand service through Amazon, allowing the global book retailing giant to handle the book on our behalf. I was expecting to sell one or two copies per month by now.”

The timing of the massive order coincides with another book development. “I attended the ‘one year to go’ media event for PlantworX 2019 and I have agreed to donate copies of our other children’s book – My Dad Drives a Digger – for the show’s student day,” Anthony continues. “Despite atrocious weather, PlantworX 2017 attracted more than 300 children and PlantworX 2019 is hoping to increase that number still further, inspiring another generation of digger drivers and enthusiasts. And we’re delighted to be a part of that effort.”

Worker killed at Georgia paper mill…

Man killed named as Juan Medina.

Fire officials say a worker is dead after he was pinned beneath falling debris while doing demolition work at a Georgia paper mill.

Savannah fire department spokeswoman Jenel Few says a boiler platform collapsed Tuesday morning at the mill owned by International Paper as a demolition crew was cutting through pipes to remove the structure.

She told news outlets that a man working on a manlift was trapped beneath a mass of fallen boiler pipes.

Few said a rescue team of firefighters cleared a path to the worker, but found him dead.

International Paper identified the man as a contract worker named Juan Medina.

Company spokeswoman Karen Bogans said Memphis, Tennessee, based International Paper is working with authorities to determine what caused the collapse.

The company released the following statement regarding the incident:

“…We are saddened to learn of the loss of one of our contractor team members, Juan Medina. This is a difficult day for all of us here at the Savannah mill and our thoughts are with Juan’s family, friends and colleagues. We are working with authorities to determine the cause of this accident and we will share the findings once we are able to do so. Safety is paramount for all of us at International Paper, which makes today’s news that much more difficult to process…”

Midas Touch…

French demolition workers unearth haul of 600 gold coins.

French gendarmes say workers paid to demolish an uninhabited house in Brittany made an unexpected discovery in the cellar — 600 gold coins.

The Pont-Aven gendarmerie said Monday that after rattling a mysterious, shell-shaped container, the workers discovered the coins inside. They were Belgian, dated 1870, and bore the face of the then-reigning king of Belgium, Leopold II.

The gendarmerie said the workers reported the discovery and the treasure has since been put under lock and key until more information is unearthed about its provenance.

Brand new episode of Demolition TV focuses on the issue of waste.

Over the past few decades, demolition has shifted further and further way from its traditional construction cousin and has grown ever closer to the waste sector. And that shift is reflected in the all-new episode of Demolition TV.

In this special episode of Demolition TV, we look at how one demolition company has turned waste into a highly profitable part of his business. We check out a new website that helps demolition contractors get the best price for their scrap metals. Video – Stack succumbs at second attempt…

First blast reduced the height; second blast did the trick.

Workers on Friday used explosives to topple a smokestack that withstood an initial demolition attempt at the former Duquesne Light-owned Frank R. Phillips Power Station in Crescent, erasing the last visible remnant of the long-idled plant.

Duquesne Light opened the plant in 1943 to provide additional power for industries operating at full capacity during World War II. The plant, which straddles Beaver and Allegheny counties along the Ohio River, was named in honour of a former Duquesne Light president.

Jacksonville braced for blast…

Countdown commences as cooling tower implosion draws near.

The twin 464-foot tall cooling towers that have been a fixture of the north Jacksonville skyline since the 1980s are coming down with a bang June 16.

Total Wrecking & Environmental LLC, the demolition contractor, has partnered with Dreams Come True, a local nonprofit to hold an online auction to “Push the Plunger.” The donations will go to Dreams Come True, which grants dreams for children with life-threatening medical conditions in Northeast Florida. Information is available at dreamscometrue.ejoinme.org/sjrpp.

In November, Total Wrecking was awarded a $17.73 million contract to demolish the cooling towers and other structures at the decommissioned power plant at 11201 New Berlin Road.

The demolition permit for the cooling towers was issued in April and Total Wrecking has been preparing the facility for the implosion. Plastic filter and other material has been removed.
