Video – I care about eye care…

Why I am belatedly taking better care of my eyesight on-site.

Over the years, I have spent hundreds if not thousands of pounds on designer glasses, sunglasses and reading glasses. And yet, when I am on site, I have traditionally relied upon cheap and disposable safety glasses to protect my eyes.

But not any longer. Following an accident in 2016 in which I was almost lost my left eye, I am now taking the matter of on-site eye protection more seriously. And I am doing so thanks to Nothingbutsafetyglasses.com.

NFDC Presidency thrown into turmoil…again

Caretaker presidency in question in wake of company acquisition.

The presidency of the National Federation of Demolition Contractors has been thrown into tumult and turmoil yet again with the news that Martin O’Donnell – caretaker president and president-elect – has asked the Federation’s National Council to consider his position.

His request follows the acquisition of his company KDC Contractors by waste management giant Veolia last week. As we reported at the time, this had the potential to place O’Donnell in the same position – not being employed by a current NFDC member company – that forced out his predecessor in the NFDC hot-seat, Paul Brown. It is thought that the nature of the Veolia acquisition might not impact upon O’Donnell’s position but it may still require ratification by the NFDC National Council.

It is the latest twist in a saga that can be traced back to November last year when moves were made to oust incumbent NFDC president Paul Brown. Brown fought off numerous attempts to force him out before he finally succumbed when his employment with NFDC member Lowery Demolition came to an end. Despite then being employed by another NFDC member – Total Reclaims – Paul Brown was not allowed to take up the reins again; and presidential responsibilities were handed to then vice-president Martin O’Donnell and second vice-president Holly Price.

DemolitionNews understands that Martin O’Donnell – demonstrating the dignity of a president-in-waiting – has asked the National Council to consider his position in the wake of the Veolia acquisition to avoid a repeat of the Paul Brown debacle. We further understand that O’Donnell is hopeful that he can retain his position as caretaker president before taking up the role of NFDC president in March next year.

The National Council of the NFDC is scheduled to meet later this month.

Clifford Devlin shuffles management pack…

Management restructure for contractor Clifford Devlin

Clifford Devlin has announced a restructuring of its management team. The London-based contractor, which specialises in demolition, asbestos management and building works, has created a second-tier ‘management board’ which will report directly to its main Board of Directors.

The new team will initially consist of Ian O’Connor (Group HSQE Manager), Derek Aslett (Head of Commercial) and Damien Flatley (Head of Demolition).

“The Management Board will ensure a seamless continuation of the Clifford Devlin business into the future,” says managing director Tim Clifford. “Its has been designed to reduce some of the burden for day-to-day activities on the Board of Directors and provide a development pathway through the business for key members of staff with the potential to achieve Director status.”

The new management board will be expected to provide fresh ideas, initiatives and input into the Group’s operational and commercial performance and be actively engaged in business development and client liaison.

Breaking News – Maylarch acquired…

Industry rationalisation continues as M&M Waste snaps up Maylarch.

M&M Waste Solutions has acquired Maylarch Ltd, an award winning, multi disciplinary, environmental services contractor. The company specialises in bespoke demolition, licensed asbestos removal, land remediation, waste management solutions as well as offering a full scope of environmental surveying services across the UK. The company has extensive experience working within a wide range of buildings and structure in the private and public sectors across health, education, commercial, industrial, utilities and social housing.

M&M Waste Solutions has been established over 45 years supplying waste collection services together with a full complement of waste management solutions throughout Oxfordshire and the surrounding counties. An extensive fleet of collection vehicles operate from Worton Park near Cassington, Oxford where the business operates a state of the art Materials Recycling Facility and Waste Transfer Station which recycles up to 150,000 tonnes of material every year.

The two companies will continue to operate separately to maintain their branding, and specialist services.

“This deal will allow further growth and security for all those working for Maylarch and will increase opportunities for our customers and suppliers,” says Simon Ward, Managing Director of Maylarch. “We can see some great opportunities opening up with M&M”

This is a view shared by Rob Fluckiger, Managing Director at M&M Waste Solutions. “We are delighted that this deal has been concluded as we have recently enjoyed working on a number of successful projects with Maylarch,” Fluckiger concludes. “There is great synergy between our two companies and the combination of knowledge, experience and capability within both businesses complement one another extremely well.”

M&M’s acquisition of Maylarch follows hot on the heels of Veolia’s acquisition of KDC Contractors, and suggests not only a rationalisation of the UK demolition industry but also signals closer ties between the demolition and waste sectors.

Video – Third time lucky…

Tampa building finally succumbs after repeated demolition attempts.

A building in Tampa that was supposed to be torn down Sunday was finally brought down Tuesday after days of demolition attempts.

The five-story structure was planned to be demolished in a quick, 30-second process by contracting company Barr & Barr, making way for the multi-million dollar “Midtown Tampa” project. The demolition plan was to use excavators attached to cables to essentially pull down the building. But the cables snapped each time and the building remained up for two more days.

On Tuesday, crews tried again and by late morning, a corner of the building finally collapsed.

Early Tuesday evening, their efforts were finally successful.

Breaking News – Sloyan Doyle calls it a day…

Company to close as directors choose to retire.

In a shock announcement, respected Liverpool-based demolition contractor Sloyan Doyle is to close its doors after more than 40 years.

A statement on the company’s social media feed says:

“…The Directors of Sloyan Doyle Demolition have recently taken the decision to retire and close down the demolition business.

All of the plant in the sale has been under the ownership of the business since new and has been kept in excellent working order, with servicing carried out by main dealers.

We would like to take his opportunity to thank all of our staff, customers and suppliers with whom we have worked with over the years…”

The company has appointed auctioneer Malcolm Harrison to dispose of the company’s extensive plant fleet in a closing down sale that will take place on 14 July 2018.

Incorporated in 1964 as J Doyle & Co (Demolition) Ltd and built up over two generations of the Sloyan family, Sloyan Doyle Demolition is one of the best known and respected names for demolition and recycling in the UK. The company is also a member of the National Federation of Demolition Contractors (NFDC).

Breaking News – Veolia swallows KDC Contractors…

Waste giant acquires major contractor.

DemolitionNews understands that Manchester-based decommissioning and demolition contractor KDC Contractors has been acquired by waste management and recycling giant Veolia.

“The strategic integration of KDC will expand our onshore and offshore decommissioning, technical demolition and land remediation capabilities,” says Kevin Hurst, Chief Operating Officer for Industrial Customers at Veolia. “It will enable us to deliver more innovative solutions, and build the circular economy by realising the financial and environmental value of these materials.”

The acquisition of KDC is the latest in a string of high-profile buy-ins to the UK demolition business that has seen both DSM Group and Clarke Demolition Contractors (CDC) bought in recent months.

At the time of writing, Martin O’Donnell, KDC’s Director Responsible for Safety and Operations, was unavailable for comment, and there is no word as yet on the likely impact for KDC Contractors’ staff or on O’Donnell’s role in the newly-acquired business.

Readers will recall that former National Federation of Demolition Contractors’ president Paul Brown was ousted when he ceased to be employed by an NFDC member company.
