Squatters’ narrow escape…

House demolition begins with two people still inside.

There was a major snag Tuesday morning when a backhoe started tearing down a northside San Angelo home — there were two people inside.

The house was called in for demolition by the owner, who lives out of town. Soon after the demolition began about 9:30 am, two people came out of the house, stopping the demolition.

There were no injuries, said Samantha Schwartz, fire investigator and dangerous buildings investigator with the San Angelo Fire Department. She identified the two people as squatters. One of them was arrested on outstanding warrants.

It is unknown what will happen to the other person, as Schwartz said that will be a discussion between that person and the homeowner.

Their identities were not released.

Video – Stack downed Down Under…

Giant Port Augusta chimney felled in controlled blast.

One of Australia’s tallest chimney stacks has been demolished in a controlled explosion at the site of a former coal-fired power station.

Constructed in 1984, the 200-metre stack at the Northern Power Station site once towered over the outskirts of Port Augusta in South Australia’s north, and became a local landmark.

The structure was the second tallest in the state, reaching a height almost 70 metres above Adelaide’s most prominent building.

A 500-metre exclusion zone was established around the site to protect onlookers from the explosion, which was carried out by Precision Demolition in conjunction with Flinders Power and McMahon Services Australia.

Video – High reach car lift…

High reach excavator deployed to remove cars from ill-fated car park.

Work is underway to demolish the fire-raved multi-storey car park at the Echo Arena in Liverpool. But before the crew from Howard Stott Demolition can start on the structure itself, there is the small matter of the burned-out cars still sitting in the structure almost a year after the fire.

The blaze engulfed Liverpool Waterfront car park in King’s Dock, next to the Arena and Convention Centre, on New Year’s Eve 2017. More than 1,000 cars were completely burnt out in temperatures reaching 1,000C, said Liverpool City Council.

Crumbling bridge puts Xmas on hold…

170-year old bridge to be demolished during festive period.

At least one demolition crew will miss out on the Christmas turkey, Queen’s speech and another re-run of The Sound of Music this year as a frail 170-year-old bridge that poses a threat to services on the East Coast Main Line in Aberdeenshire is to be demolished in a £1 million operation starting on Christmas Day.

The deteriorating Abbeyton Bridge, on the B966 just north of Fordoun, is threatening the region’s railway link with the south, with the potential for it to collapse onto the rails below.

No vehicular traffic has been allowed on the bridge since July, when inspections found serious failings in the structure.

Specialist contractor Amco Giffen has been brought in by Aberdeenshire Council and will work alongside council engineers to dismantle the bridge, starting at 10pm on Christmas Eve – after the last train of the day. The aim is to finish the work during Boxing Day.

The cost of the demolition alone is expected to be in the region of £1m, over one third of the council’s £2.8m annual budget for bridges and other structures. As a result, the council has warned that there will be a delay in planned works on other bridges and structures around Aberdeenshire, which may deteriorate further in the interim.

Contractor indicted over bribery claims…

Man stands accused of bribing Cleveland officials for preferential treatment.

An Ohio demolition contractor was indicted by a federal grand jury on Tuesday on charges that he bribed the former chief of the city of Cleveland’s demolition bureau to get a leg up on city work.

Eric Witherspoon, the head of Arick’s Environmental Services and Arick’s Services, is charged with two counts of bribery and seven counts of honest services wire fraud. Witherspoon, who does asbestos removal and demolition work, is accused of giving cash to Rufus Taylor, the now-retired head of the city’s demolition bureau, in exchange for confidential information and preferential treatment for city jobs.

Witherspoon, 55, of Warrensvillle Heights, gave thousands of dollars in bribes to Taylor over several years.

Taylor pleaded guilty Sept. 4 to extortion and bribery in a federally funded program. He admitted to taking thousands of dollars in bribes from two contractors and gave them preferential treatment for government-funded demolition and abatement projects.

The brief demolition was successfully carried out by Wreckers Demolition on behalf of the municipality, provincial cricket controlling authorities (the Eastern Cricket Union) and Cricket South Africa (CSA).

The towers, which have been standing for decades, were only earmarked for demolition once a clearance had been given for their removal by relevant heritage authorities.

The latest film from Demolition TV is a mini epic.

A short while ago, the Demolition TV film crew visited a site in Hersham near Walton-on-Thames, Surrey where Shorts Group was demolishing a former school.

And now they have, we are delighted to bring you this fantastic new film that features brief cameos from (among others) both LDH Attachments and the sponsor of Demolition News Radio, Willow Hire.
