C&D and the power of collaboration

On the morning of Sunday 2 March, a water tower and four 72-metre tall chimneys came crashing to the ground in a controlled explosive demolition event in Sheffield. The blast was a huge success that made the news headlines. But the story of that blast started more than eight months previously. And it is a story that highlights the collaborative nature of the demolition industry of today.

“C&D Engineering Consultants were appointed project manager and principal designer back in June 2024,” explains C&D managing director, Mike Kehoe. “We were appointed by Andy McGee of McGee Holdings, a man with a phenomenal background in the demolition industry himself. So we were very proud to have been awarded this contract.”

C&D awarded was responsible for procurement, appointing Metropolitan Demolition as the demolition contractor for the removal of the water tower and the four chimneys and several other regular buildings on the site.

Metropolitan also appointed PDC Ltd and SES to carry out the explosive demolition, in consultation with C&D.

“This project was very much a collaboration between a number of stakeholders who all pulled together to deliver a successful demolition,” Mike Kehoe concludes. “Everyone involved should be hugely proud of the part they played.”
