In April 1989 as a young journalist, I accompanied a souped-up JCB machine driven by HE Services Hugh Edeleanu as it set a new record for the John O’Groats to Lands End trek in a backhoe loader.
The 911 mile journey included a guard of honour at the (much smaller) JCB World Headquarters. Little did any of us realise that while we were taking photos and making ready for the final leg of our journey, the Hillsborough Disaster was unfolding less than 70 miles away.
