Countdown commences as cooling tower implosion draws near.
The twin 464-foot tall cooling towers that have been a fixture of the north Jacksonville skyline since the 1980s are coming down with a bang June 16.
Total Wrecking & Environmental LLC, the demolition contractor, has partnered with Dreams Come True, a local nonprofit to hold an online auction to “Push the Plunger.” The donations will go to Dreams Come True, which grants dreams for children with life-threatening medical conditions in Northeast Florida. In November, Total Wrecking was awarded a $17.73 million contract to demolish the cooling towers and other structures at the decommissioned power plant at 11201 New Berlin Road.
The demolition permit for the cooling towers was issued in April and Total Wrecking has been preparing the facility for the implosion. Plastic filter and other material has been removed.
