Winter storms buckled and twisted the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge in Big Sur, cracking concrete and displacing columns and rendering the entire structure unsafe.
And so, Caltrans called in a crane equipped with a three tonne wrecking ball which it intended to drop repeatedly onto the bridge deck to commence the demolition works.
But as this video shows, the wrecking ball was hitting the deck with all the force of a pea dropped from a height of six inches, and making the wrecking ball a laughing stock among its peers in the wrecking ball community:
