Glasgow’s Old College Bar faces the axe ahead of student accommodation plans.
Plans to demolish one of Glasgow’s oldest buildings for a towering student flat development have been submitted to Glasgow City Council.
If the proposal goes ahead, the 12-storey, 426-bed flat complex will replace the Old College Bar, said to be the oldest pub in Glasgow.
The High Street pub building dates back to the early 1800s, although the foundations are older – in fact, there are references to a building on the same as far back as the late 1500s, and historian Diana Connell submitted a note on the planning application on January 11 stating that the building’s sub structure “probably dates to about 1470”.
Despite its history, the Old College Bar remains unlisted – although the planning application, submitted in December, notes that it is within a conservation area.
