Demolition will make way for new city centre library.
The next major milestone in the Better Barnsley project is underway with the former retail units opposite the May Day Green Market being demolished to make way for a £4 million community facility that will host a new library.
As the cornerstone of the Better Barnsley project this new facility will house a new modern library and multifunctional space, including a Changing Places facility for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets and a sanctuary space for those who might need a quiet, peaceful place away from the busy town centre. The design will also offer IT facilities to help residents get online, a cafe and roof terrace with views over the town offering opportunities for functions and events.
The demolition work – carried out by Hague Plant – will be completed by Christmas with the building work due to commence early 2017.
