No implosion date following delays caused by Hurricane Matthew.
The historic smoke stack at the now-defunct Georgia Power Company Plant Harlee Branch at Lake Sinclair in Putnam County has been given a little longer to stand, thanks in part to Hurricane Matthew.
The smoke stack, which stands 1,002 feet, and is regarded as the seventh tallest smoke chimney in the world, was scheduled to have come down this past weekend. But the hurricane that wreaked havoc all along the Georgia coast and caused millions in damages resulted in officials postponing the demolition of the smoke stack twice.
Georgia Power officials had first said the plant’s smoke stack would come down on Saturday. But when the hurricane began drawing closer to the state’s coast, they postponed the event and rescheduled it for Sunday.
As it turned out, it didn’t happen then, either.
Now Georgia Power officials don’t actually know when the smoke stack will be taken down.
“There is no rescheduled date at this time,” said Georgia Power spokesman John Kraft.
