Triple implosion fells giants at West Phoenix power plant.
Two emission stacks of 200 feet and 135 feet and a water tower came toppling down Saturday around 6:20 a.m. without a hitch in the planned implosion of an old power plant in west Phoenix.
At one time, the old plant, put into service in 1930 by Central Arizona Light and Power Co. (now APS) was one of the Valley’s largest energy producers, with a capacity of 18 megawatts.
It supplied enough electricity to power all of Phoenix, with a population back then of nearly 50,000 residents, and the surrounding community.
