It is a £1 billion industry. It is run by hundreds of dedicated men and women, makes use of heavy equipment, and embraces the very latest in technology.
But this industry is not demolition; it is plant theft. And it is costing UK construction and demolition companies millions in lost equipment, lost production and elevated insurance premiums.
According to industry experts, more than £1 million of equipment is stolen from UK sites each week. Factor in the loss of production, cost of replacement equipment and the resulting hike in insurance costs and the £1 billion per year estimate might even be conservative.
