Machine might tug of war fells boiler house.
JDC Demolition is currently decommissioning, decontaminating and demolishing the former Salem Harbor Power Station in Salem, Massachusetts, USA.
The formerly coal and/or fuel oil fed Unit 3 Boiler went into commercial operation in 1959 and produced 165 MW. The footprint was 65 ft. x 65ft. and was 165 ft. tall.
JDC’s engineered demolition plan consisted of completely separating the rear from Boiler 2 and completely separating the left side from the coal hoppers. Preliminary removal of cross bracing and non weight bearing columns were done using precision torch cuts. A Komatsu PC 800 handled pulling of the front column plugs, while a Volvo 700HDR, a Komastu PC390, PC650 and PC750 directed the fall with cable threaded through the structure 100 ft up.
The stunning video (below) takes about four minutes to get to the money shot but trust me; it’s worth the wait.
