Boiler blast the first of many Duke Energy plant.
Demolition at the former coal-fired Duke Energy Sutton Plant shook many Wilmington-area residents awake early Sunday.
The implosion heard round the Cape Fear region brought down one of three boilers at the plant off of US 421 North in New Hanover County.
“This is an important milestone in the retirement of the plant, and in Duke Energy’s plans to shift to cleaner, more efficient energy sources in North Carolina,” company spokesman Jeff Brooks said afterward.
Sunday’s implosion, which was carried out by Dykon Explosive Demolition Corp, is the first of three similar events to take place at the plant, Brooks said. The next is scheduled in May and the final demolition event will take place in the fall of 2016.
