Belated discovery of asbestos adds month to contract schedule.
Unexpectedly high amounts of asbestos means it will take an extra month for demolition at the former Monsour Medical Center site along Route 30 in Jeannette to be completed.
A change order in the project approved Thursday by the Westmoreland County Industrial Development Corp. allows Dore & Associates until April 30 to finish the work.
“I think the project’s moving along very well,” said Jason Rigone, director of the development corporation, which is overseeing the work. “This short time extension is really just a response reaction to additional asbestos.”
Demolition and remediation has been ongoing at the site for months. The nine-story, cylindrical tower collapsed into a heap of concrete and reinforcing steel bars March 2. That was about a week after consistent work to get the stubborn structure down.
