Former home of drug baron to be demolished.
The Miami Beach mansion once owned by Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar is set to be demolished.
The current owner, Christian de Berdouare, says that the house will be torn down Tuesday to make way for a new mansion.
Prior to demolition, a team of specialists with metal detectors and sonar equipment has been called to the site “to determine if there is anything hidden.”
The walls and floors of the house might be stacked with treasure as Escobar “used to hide money in all his houses,” de Berdouare told AFP. But he is prepared for “anything,” he added, saying that some less pleasant findings might await him.
De Berdouare founded the Chicken Kitchen fast-food chain. He said he’s not sure if he and his wife will live in the new home or try to sell it.
Miami-Dade County records show that Escobar bought the property in March 1980 for $762,500. U.S. authorities seized the mansion in 1987, along with $20 million. Escobar was killed in a shoot-out with Colombian authorities in 1993.
