Man loses arm and hand in demolition yard accident.
A 64-year old man is in the high dependency unit at Wythenshawe Hospital in the North West of England following a horrific accident in which his arm was amputated at the elbow and he lost his hand on the other arm.
The accident happened some two weeks ago and the man has been named as David Whitfield, a worker with S. Evans & Sons Ltd in Widnes, Cheshire.
Over a course of seven operations, surgeons have grafted Whitfield’s right arm to his leg to keep the circulation flowing. In time they plan to remove his big toes and little toes to join onto his remaining arm so he has some kind of grip.
The company has issued a statement: Unfortunately, an accident occurred at our Head Office Depot resulting in one of our team suffering a serious injury. The accident has been reported to the Health and Safety Executive and we are currently using all available resource to investigate the incident thoroughly and do not feel that it is appropriate at this time to speculate on the outcomes of this process until it is finalised.
At this difficult time our thoughts are obviously with the injured person and his family and out of respect for the injured person the outcomes shall be discussed with them first before any public statement is made and they are being kept fully up to date and involved as the investigation progresses.
This is not the first accident to befall S. Evans & Sons. Back in 2011, we exclusively revealed that a scrap handler had toppled over at the company’s yard – dubbed “Metal Mountain” by local residents.
