M62 bridge closed ahead of demolition.
The “sausage bridge” across the M62 near Huyton has closed for good today, as work begins on a replacement.
The Greystone footbridge, as it is officially known, will be demolished this weekend, giving keen users just a few days to see the bridge for the last time.
A Knowsley council spokeswoman said the brown footbridge had “helped generations of the local community safely cross the M62”, but that it had now “reached the end of its serviceable life”.
The council spokeswoman added that the new bridge, due to open on October 19, “will also give visitors to the borough a real sense of arrival as they pass through this impressive gateway”.
