Developer feels local council’s wrath.
Westminster council has ordered a developer to completely rebuild a pub that they demolished without permission in order to build flats.
The Carlton Tavern had stood in Maida Vale, west London, for more than 90 years, so residents were understandably shocked when it was demolished one day without notice.
The owner of the site, CLTX an Israeli based developer, had told staff not to come in on April 8th because an inventory was being taken. At the same time the bulldozers moved in, and by the next day the familiar old pub was nothing but rubble.
The developer had wanted to demolish the old building, which was being considered for a heritage Grade II listing, and throw up a block of flats in its place, but their planning application for this was rejected by Westminster council in January this year.
