Confusion reigns over date of Christchurch police station implosion.
A date for the implosion of Christchurch’s former police station has not been confirmed, despite social media reports suggesting otherwise.
Rebuild Christchurch stated on its Facebook page this week that the implosion of the old police building on Hereford St would take place on April 18, but project leaders Ceres New Zealand said that date was incorrect.
The 13-storey building was damaged in the February 2011 earthquake and police moved into a $20 million temporary building on St Asaph St in late 2012. The Christchurch City Council issued consent for the demolition of the old police building in September, and in July, Ceres New Zealand manager Bernie de Vere✓ confirmed the company would be involved.
Ceres New Zealand previously assisted with the implosion of the Radio Network House on Gloucester St in 2012 – the first controlled building demolition by explosives in New Zealand.
De Vere said a date for the implosion was yet to be confirmed and it was “disappointing” thousands of people had been misled on social media.
“An exact implosion date is still being finalised. However, it is scheduled to occur in the first quarter of 2015.”
