Former Christchurch police station set for implosion.
Christchurch’s former central city police station will most likely be brought down by implosion.
Earlier this year Ngai Tahu Property (NTP) confirmed the former Christchurch central police station on Hereford St could be demolished by either implosion or traditional demolition.
The Christchurch City Council has now issued consent for the building to be demolished by implosion or traditional means. A spokeswoman said it was up to the building owner to confirm which option would be taken.
Council director for building control and city rebuild Peter Sparrow said the consent was issued in September.
”The process included verification that the demolition meets the requirements of the New Zealand building code,” he said.”
”This included controlled implosive demolition.”
Building code rules in relation to this work were ”very strict”, he said, and were designed to protect workers and members of the public.
The demolition programme met all requirements and a strip-out of the building in preparation for demolition was now underway, Sparrow said.
The 13-storey tower was damaged in the earthquakes and police staff moved out of the central site in late 2012.
