Decisive action following transformer fire.
Coleman & Company Ltd has reacted quickly to a fire at the Didcot A power station site, one of the UK’s largest demolition sites. The company has been on-site, undertaking specialist deconstruction and demolition activities since March 2014. According to a company statement:
“…A fire started in a decommissioned industrial transformer, situated adjacent to other buildings at approximately 15.30 on the 25th June 2014.
In recognition of the demolition activities being undertaken, Coleman & Company Ltd had a fire engine and trained personnel in attendance, as is standard practice.
When it became clear that the intensity of the fire was beyond the resources immediately available on-site the emergency plan was executed. The site was evacuated. No one was injured and all personnel were accounted for.
The Fire Service was called at 16.30 and they were swiftly in attendance.
Fire fighters attended this protracted incident throughout the night and have controlled the situation, which was complicated by the challenges of gaining access inside the unit.
At 13.30 on the 26th June, with the fire under control, the Fire Service handed the incident back to Coleman & Company Ltd.
Coleman & Company Ltd have already commenced an investigation, into the cause of the fire. We recognise the importance of understanding what if any lessons can be learnt from this incident.
Both RWE and Coleman & Company Ltd are committed to fully co-operate with the Fire Service and other agency investigations…”
