Explosive end in sight for abandoned building.
An 11-storey abandoned building that will be demolished to make room for a new convention centre in downtown Albany, New York could fall with a bang — literally.
Columbia Development Cos. is actively considering having its contractor line the former Wellington Hotel annex on Howard Street with explosives, so the building can be imploded, a rare method for a large demolition in the region.
“We’re reviewing the structural portion of the building to see whether or not that’s feasible,” said Michael Arcangel, executive project manager at Columbia Development in Albany.
Implosions are more expensive than conventional methods using a wrecking ball, trucks equipped with claws and other machinery, but they have advantages, Arcangel said.
