Industrial accident on Ottawa site kills 45-year old worker.
A 45-year-old man was pronounced dead in hospital following an industrial accident at a construction site in downtown Ottawa, police said Monday.
Police said they responded to the intersection of Bank and Sparks Streets at approximately 1:45 p.m.
PCL Construction issued a statement Monday afternoon saying it is “deeply shocked and saddened” by the incident. The company said the dead worker was from Priestly Demolition, a company subcontracted on the construction site.
The Ministry of Labour is leading the investigation with assistance from Ottawa police. A Ministry investigation is standard procedure in any case of a workplace death. CBC reported that Ottawa Fire Services spokesman Marc Messier said the man had a severe head injury it was “obvious” that either a piece of a wall or a brick from wall had fallen on the man as it was being demolished.
The site will be closed until further notice, the PCL Construction said.
