Company at centre of protracted Bellaire Bridge saga files for bankruptcy.
The residents of Benwood, West Virginia and Bellaire, Ohio are resigning themselves to the fact that the Bellaire Bridge linking them across the Ohio River is now more likely to fall down than be demolished.
The news comes as the bridge’s owner and demolition contractor in waiting – Delta Demolition – has filed for Chapter 7 liquidation at US bankruptcy court in Virginia, claiming assets of less than $500,000 and liabilities in excess of $1 million.
Regular readers will know that Delta Demolition fought a long, bitter and presumably expensive legal battle with Advanced Explosive Demolition (AED) over the ownership of the bridge. Since then, Delta Demolition has failed to satisfy local officials’ demands and was facing a $1,000 daily fine for failing to submit the required cash security bond to the city.
A meeting of creditors is scheduled for 22 April 2014.
