Demolition day for Hebburn 1970s relic
The transformation of Hebburn town centre moved a step closer after senior councillors gave the go-ahead for demolition of an outdated tower block.
South Tyneside Council’s cabinet yesterday approved proposals to flatten Westmorland Court, a nine-storey block built for the old Hebburn Town Council in the early 1970s.
Councillors have welcomed plans to demolish the residential block to make way for high quality, modern, family homes.
Coun Jim Foreman, lead member for Housing and Transport at South Tyneside Council, said: “We are committed to making Hebburn Newtown a great place to live – and, unfortunately, Westmorland Court doesn’t meet the standards we want to see in the borough.
“It was built to an unusual 1970s design and this creates further problems for any attempt to bring it in line with 21st century expectations.
“The best option is therefore to demolish Westmorland Court and offer alternative homes to residents.
