Better late than never as the Purple Haze edition arrives.
In journalism, as in comedy, timing is everything. And, even though it is running almost three weeks late, the latest issue of the Demolition magazine – the Purple Haze edition – arrives just as the US and UK demolition industries go into their annual self-congratulatory huddles of conventions, seminars and awards ceremonies.
It was a bold decision to delay the magazine to make way for the extensive New World Order article; but it was a decision made easier by the help, support and contribution of over 100 (sadly anonymous) contributors that chose to voice their concerns and criticisms of the industry today.
It makes for difficult reading, with an over-riding backdrop of fear:
• Fear instilled in children, turning them off of pursuing a demolition career from an early age
• Fear of death and maiming among demolition workers
• Fear of those same demolition workers to voice their concerns left they earn a troublemaker reputation
• And fear of demolition companies to “out” clients for whom cost is more important than safety
The article is focused primarily upon the UK demolition industry but it will (or should) resonate on both sides of the Atlantic.
