Media reports claim new European blast record.
The 116 metre tall former university tower AfE in Frankfurt came down in seconds yesterday in what is claimed to be the largest controlled building demolition ever in Europe.
It required 950 kilogrammes of explosives to bring down the 41-year-old tower, the German newspaper Bild reported.
A 250 metre exclusion zone was set up around the tower before the explosion, and people were banned from entering the surrounding streets from midnight.
The high-rise building was originally going to be demolished gradually, but authorities decided to blast it after residents objected to lengthy and noisy demolition work.
Two new office towers will be built on the site.
