An exclusion zone was set up around the city centre’s Capitol car park before the planned blasts on Sunday morning.
The demolition of buildings in John Frost Square marks the first phase of the Friars Walk development.
The city council said the development of shops and restaurants would take Newport “another step closer to a regenerated city centre”.
