NASA to demolish crane used to lift Space Shuttle.
NASA plans to issue an Invitation for Bids (IFB) this month to demolish the Space Shuttle Mate-Demate Device (MDD) at Dryden Flight Research Center (DFRC) in California. The agency made the announcement in contract documents released Tuesday.
The Space Shuttle MDD is a large gantry-like steel structure used to hoist the orbiters off the ground during post-landing servicing operations and during mating and demating operations with the 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft.
“The order of magnitude for the procurement is between $500,000 and $1 million and the effort shall be completed within 120 calendar days after notice to proceed,” NASA said. The anticipated release date of the IFB is on or about Jan. 21 with an offer closing date on or about Feb. 21. “The firm date for receipt of bids or proposals will be stated in the IFB.”
