Work stopped by EDS Decommissioning bankruptcy.
The owners of a power plant in Sorel-Tracy, Canada are evaluating the continuation of a major power plant dismantling project that halted when chosen contractors EDS Decommissioning Canada Inc slipped into bankruptcy just before Christmas.
Work began at the Hydro-Quebec facility in January 2013 but was halted last month when the Silverdell group company went out of business. Given the complexity of dismantling a thermal power plant, it is not yet known who will replace EDS on the contract or if the change of contractor will impact upon the $19 million price tag originally placed on the works. Wortks were originally scheduled to end this month but that is now unlikely.
“It is difficult to say how long it will take us to find a solution, because we have no experience in this kind of situation,” says Hydro-Quebec’s Marie-Eve Sylvestre.
It is also impossible to know if the work stoppage will cause an increase in the cost of decommissioning. “It is still too early to tell,” said the spokesman.
