CLS battles storms to ensure Calcium Carbide Plant is blasted on schedule.
Earlier today, CLS carried out the successful explosive demolition of the calcium Carbide Hoppers at Althorpe Wharf. This was despite battling with 80 mph winds and site flooding during the preceding days.
The implosion was carried out in conjunction with explosives engineers from SES demolition Ltd and Index Explosives Engineers Ltd
Approximately 12 kg of explosives was used to disrupt the pre-weakened building, cutting plans and sequence had to be amended to ensure the stability of the structure situated on the banks of the river Trent during the worst storms and river surge seen in the area for 60 years.
At 08.45 on Sunday morning as planned the 400 tonne steel structure was toppled forward using a double hinge technique into the designated area avoiding the live sub-station only 7seven metres from the building.
