Design for Deconstruction set to be the “next big thing” in construction.
The demolition industry has grown extremely adept at demolishing buildings erected in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. But if the industry of the future is to demolish those built today with the same levels of efficiency, architects and construction companies need to build with demolition in mind.
That is the view of Dr Terry Quarmby, former president of the Institute of Demolition Engineers, acclaimed industry expert and a keen advocate of Design for Deconstruction.
In this Demolition magazine exclusive, Quarmby sets out his plan for addressing the issue of waste when landfill is no longer an option; and suggests that the soft strip of the future might be tackled by men wearing powered suits straight from a sci-fi movie.
