Latest stage of Elephant & Castle regeneration begins.
On 30 September, the council begins the next stage of demolition at Heygate estate, as part of its £3bn regeneration of Elephant and Castle.
Kingshill, Swanbourne and Wansey – three monolithic blocks to the east of Walworth Road and south of Heygate Street are set to be demolished from the inside out over the next few months.
The process begins with stripping out the internal structure of the building, leaving a shell of concrete supporting walls which will be taken down in early 2014.
As the external walls are removed early next year, the interior decorations of the rooms will be revealed. The demolition at this stage can take just a matter of days to level the buildings, leaving a clear view through Walworth that hasn’t been seen since the late 1960s.
The demolition paves the way for bright, sustainable new homes for over 2,500 families in a vibrant part of Walworth. Gone will be the intimidating concrete rat-runs, dingy pathways and dangerous crossing-less routes through the traffic. They will be replaced with shops, pavements, park land, and places to play.
Lend Lease, has selected Keltbray as its demolition contractor and they will begin the works by clearing the flats and removing the asbestos over the first three to four months before external demolition begins in early 2014
