Council confirms that Elephant & Castle shopping centre is to be demolished.
Southwark Council has confirmed that it will insist on the demolition of Elephant and Castle shopping centre as part of its £3bn regeneration project.
Councillor Fiona Colley, cabinet member for regeneration at Southwark Council revealed, at a meeting held last night, that a compulsory purchase order will be used if it becomes necessary.
“The final piece in the jigsaw for the regeneration is the shopping centre. As the options for refurbishment were developed further, we were less and less happy with how the scheme would fit in with the rest of the area’s high quality designs,” Cllr Colley said. “The council has now rejected earlier options to retain some parts of the original building and will now insist on full demolition.”
