October implosion awaits green light from city.
Melching Inc. and its demolition explosive experts from Atlanta presented a plan to the Muskegon City Commission to bring down the former Sappi paper mill’s power plant on 27 October.
Property owner Doug Melching presented a plan to use explosives to raze the last large structure left on the former manufacturing plant at 2400 Lakeshore Dr. on Muskegon Lake. The industrial plant has been under demolition since early 2012.
The Melching team members, including Trinity Industrial Services of Atlanta, said they plan to bring down the 10-story power plant and two remaining 200-foot-plus smokestacks in two phases. The power plant would be “imploded” Oct. 27, if approved by the city of Muskegon, and the smokestacks at a later, unspecified date.
Explosive demolition expert Steve Murray of Trinity Industrial Services told commissioners at their Monday, Sept. 9 work session that bringing the massive steel structure down with small, coordinated explosions is the industry standard for removal of such an industrial building.
The first-phase demolition of the power plant would happen between 7:30 and 10:30 a.m. depending on how that day’s preparation goes, Melching officials said.
