Cameras roll as steeple falls onto excavator driven by firm owner.
It was something eyewitnesses say they will never forget. Part of a church collapses on top of heavy macinery operated by John Brdaric. It happened around 11:30 a.m. Monday morning.
He was tearing down the the Holy Name/St. Mary’s Church on Shoemaker Street in Swoyersville. By all accounts everything appeared to be quite routine. A woman who was visiting the area used her I-pad to record the demolition and she captured the shocking images. The top of the church came crashed down on the heavy machinery..
“I thought it would be neat to get pictures and video cause it’s not everyday you see a church being demolished. It is really sad..for a second I thought it would fall straight down then it fell on the guy it took me a minute to realize what happened. I really freaked out I shot off the video.”
Sarah McAndrew from New Jersey said everything went in slow motion. “It kind of wobbled a bit then it started leaning back then it just fell.”
John Brdaric was trapped inside the big machine. Co-workers and first responders rushed to his aid. Witnesses say they froze not knowing what to think or do.
