Costs escalate for demolition of shaft damaged in Wellington quake.
Work to bring down a quake-damaged lift shaft in central Wellington is on track to cost the city council more than $1 million.
A 400-tonne crane has been brought in from Christchurch to dismantle the lift, which has been deemed to be unsafe following the recent earthquakes.
Wellington City Council spokesman Richard Maclean says the council’s carrying out the work using emergency powers but will be looking to recoup the costs from the building’s owners.
“We are thinking that it’s going to comfortably get into six figures, given the cost of getting the crane onto the site and also having to assemble it and it’s a very large piece of machinery and it requires a lot of people to operate it properly.”
