Conference to study waste hierarchy announced.
The McGrath Group is organising a conference in September which will explore practical ways organisations in the construction sector can implement the concept of the “Hierarchy of Waste”.
Entitled “Taking Waste to the Next Level” the half-day conference will be held on the 17th September 2013 at the London Irish Centre in Central London.
Industry experts will reveal the latest techniques in waste prevention, minimisation, re-use, recycling and recovery that will help organisations to demonstrate compliance and environmental best practice.
Speakers include:
• Katherine Adams (Building Research Establishment)
• Gareth Brown (WRAP)
• Jonathan Essex (BioRegional)
• David McGrath (McGrath Group)
The hierarchy of waste is a best practice methodical framework for addressing all of the contributing factors to a company’s waste generation. It ranks waste management options in order of environmental preference i.e. prevention and minimisation should be considered before re-use, which is preferable to recycling and energy recovery with disposal (landfill) the last resort.
The waste hierarchy has existed as a concept for some time but is now officially recognised in UK waste legislation. It is referenced in Article 4 of the Waste Framework Directive, which was revised in 2011 and requires companies to confirm they have applied the concept in the transfer of waste and to include a statement on their waste transfer notes/consignment notes.
