If you’re a Liverpool demolition contractor rubbing his hands together at the prospect of a potential job to fell the famous (infamous) Welsh Streets housing terraces, stop. The fat lady isn’t singing quite yet.
Within hours of the council giving the go-ahead to a £15 million regeneration that includes the demolition of 440 houses and the building of 150 new homes, Communities Secretary Eric Pickles froze the plan while he decides whether to hold a public inquiry.
This long-running saga has been batted back and forth for more than 13 years and is probably best-known for the furore surrounding the potential demolition of the childhood home of Ringo Starr, voice of Thomas the Tank Engine and the last man on Earth still using the peace sign in a non-ironic way.
Pickles’ decision came after representations from campaigners opposing demolition.
A Department for Communities and Local Government spokesman said: “The department has received representations asking for this application to be called-in.
