Tshwane HQ implosion gives way to state-of-the-art structure
Pretoria’s historic Munitoria building, which served as the city of Tshwane headquarters, was on Sunday brought to a pile of rubble in a matter of seconds.
The implosion of the building, which brought the capital city to a standstill with major streets being blocked for safety reasons, took place at noon.
The implosion of the building makes way for the for the new state of the art Municipal Headquarters, which is expected to accommodate all municipal departments in one building.
The new head quarters is expected to house 1500 municipal employees considered to be strong centre of municipal and will thus reduce costs and provide for efficient decision making.
Munitoria’s explosive demolition follows the March 1997 fire, which destroyed the west block. The block of the building was damaged beyond repair by the fire which was first sighted in the then office of the Licensing Department in the basement level of the Rates and Taxes Hall of the west block.
