Bilbao’s San Mames stadium is being demolished.
Anyone that knows their football (that’s soccer to those reading this from a less sportingly civilised part of the world) will know the Estadio San Mames. The oldest built stadium in Spain, the iconic venue was built in 1913 and was the home of the Athletic Bilbao team. Indeed, the stadium gave the team its nickname, Los Leones de San Mamés-Bilboko lehoiak (The Lions of San Mamés).
But with the club moving to the nearby (and considerably larger) San Mames Barria stadium, the old venue – which was largely rebuilt in 1993 in advance of the 1992 FIFA World Cup – is being demolished:
