Authorities believe the man, whose job involved licensing demolition sites, took his own life.
An inspector who surveyed a Philadelphia building before it collapsed last week, killing six people, has committed suicide, a city official has confirmed.
Deputy Mayor Everett Gillison said Ronald Wagenhoffer was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a pick-up truck on Wednesday night.
The 52-year-old was a Department of Licenses and Inspections employee who had inspected the building on May 14.
Mr Gillison says the department is in mourning and Mr Wagenhoffer “did nothing wrong”. He leaves behind a wife and son.
The building was being demolished when it collapsed onto a neighbouring Salvation Army Thrift Store on June 5.
