DSM and PDC combine to fell Midlands eyesore.
A blight on the Aston skyline came tumbling down this morning with the demolition of Normansell Tower.
Shortly before 10am a massive explosion echoed from the derelict block of flats which then came tumbling down in a matter of seconds.
Homes within 160 metres of the condemned tower were evacuated and residents put up in a nearby Salvation Army centre.
Billy Young, contract manager for DSM Demolition, the firm behind the operation, said: “The building was constructed using large concrete panels that are interlocking which would make a manual or mechanical take down expensive and very time consuming.
“The use of explosives is a much quicker, economical and safer way of demolishing the tower block.”
The tower, which has been empty for several years took less than five seconds to fall.
Contractors will now spend around eight weeks to clear and process the rubble left behind.
