Floor-by-floor likely method as city gives demolition green light.
Demolition of Genesee Towers in downtown Flint, Michigan could occur in several ways, but probably not with a dramatic implosion, local contractors say.
The fate of the downtown’s tallest building was recently revealed when former Emergency Manager Michael Brown signed a deal with Uptown Investment Corporation earlier this month before leaving office, transferring the property for $1 under the conditions it is torn down and replaced with an urban plaza.
“Well, depending on how you do it, if you shoot it down, it doesn’t take long,” said Art Dore Jr., president of Dore and Associates Contracting Inc. of Bay City.
There are plenty of companie in Michigan that could handle demolition of Genesee Towers, said Dore, who admitted he didn’t know of any single Genesee County companies that could handle a project of that scope.
Dore, like other demolition company officials, said there is a danger of damaging neighboring structures by imploding Genesee Towers.
Imploding a building uses explosives set in various spots to cause a structure to collapse inward. Dore said it takes months of preparation.
Or, “You can either bring in a ball and crane and get it down or go floor-by-floor,” he said.
