Japanese dock section survives sea voyage and first attempt at demolition.
The dock from Japan that washed up on Agate Beach is a bit smaller now, after workers finally cut a section free on Thursday. The dismantling job is proving tougher than originally thought. The massive dock will be cut into five pieces and hauled to Portland.
After the salvage crew made the first big incision, a crane couldn’t lift the chunk off the beach. First they thought it was being held down like a suction cup on the wet sand. But it turns out the saw didn’t cut all the way through some rebar. So the crew tried again late Thursday afternoon – and succeeded. But the severed chunk, estimated to weigh 47 tons, turned out to be too heavy the flatbed semi truck that was standing by. A bigger trailer will be brought in Friday.
