Programme of demolition starts on Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge.
Excavators are up on the unused section of the old Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge, with workers doing initial demolition of structures like guardrails and parapets as highway traffic whizzes by.
Significant demolition of the old, unused portion of the bridge over the Quinnipiac River, the section that used to have northbound traffic, is scheduled to begin this fall, officials said.
“We’ll take the structure apart piece by piece, starting with the deck, and the pieces will be hauled off for recycling,” said James Croll, assistant resident engineer on the project with H.W. Lochner Inc. of New Haven. “All of the concrete and steel will be recycled.”
The last pieces of the old bridge will be gone by late 2014, according to John Dunham, supervising engineer with the state Department of Transportation bureau of engineering and highway operations.
