Triple-treat Sunday as AED plans to drop IP boiler…

Paper mill boiler will make Sunday a triple treat for implosion lovers.

First we had the Grand Palace Hotel in New Orleans. Then we had the Ormond Memorial Hospital in Florida. And now, with the announcement that Advanced Explosive Demolition (AED) will take down a recovery boiler stack at the Millersburg International Paper facility, Sunday 22 July becomes a triple treat for implosion fans.

An eight-man team from AED will set up explosives in the building on Saturday and implode the 53 metre (175-foot) tall structure at 8 am local time on Sunday.

“The boiler has been idle for a decade,” said Thomas Ryan, a spokesman for International Paper. “When it’s down the material will go for scrap metal reclamation.”

Ryan said the various agencies were contacted for assistance because of the boiler’s proximity to Interstate 5 and a main rail line.

The demolition is expected to affect traffic on I-5, which will be halted for about five minutes in both directions. Traffic on Old Salem Road will not be affected.

Agencies are hoping to deter crowds near the site, and law enforcement will be on hand for control.

“We hope there will be little impact for the public. Halting travel for a brief time should minimize any chance of accidents,” says AED’s Lisa Kelly. “This is a high-profile type job and we take every precaution to keep it safe.”
